Online Study Timer — Free Pomodoro for Students
A study timer helps you work in focused blocks with planned breaks — so marathon cramming turns into repeatable sessions. Use onetimer's Pomodoro timer as a free online study timer with the classic 25/5/15 rhythm, the toolbar fullscreen control, and settings that stay in this browser.
The studying problem this timer is for
Exam prep and long assignments fail in two common ways: you never start because the pile looks endless, or you start and grind for hours until attention collapses. A single countdown on /timer is the right tool for one block — a 45-minute past paper, a 10-minute drill. It is the wrong tool when you need the same focus-break rhythm all afternoon.
onetimer's Pomodoro module is the study timer: it alternates Focus and Short Break, then a Long Break after a set number of Focus blocks. The round counter, optional task list, phase-end alarm, and Auto Start toggles live on that page — not on /timer and not on the date countdown at /countdown.
Why Pomodoro works for studying
Short, timed focus blocks reduce the cost of starting.free online timer handles one block at a time — you only have to commit to the next Focus duration, not to finishing the chapter. Breaks give your brain time to consolidate what you just read or practiced. The Pomodoro Technique names each completed Focus block a “pomodoro” — after four of them, you earn a longer rest.
On onetimer, a completed Focus is what advances the round counter. Skip during Focus also counts as a completed pomodoro (it moves you to the next break). Skip during a break returns you to Focus without changing the round. That is product behavior, not a textbook rule — use Skip when you are genuinely done, not to game the count.
Recommended study timer settings
Open Pomodoro Settings with the gear in the site navigation (toolbar control labeled Pomodoro settings). Under the Timer group you will see Focus (min), Short Break (min), Long Break (min), Pomodoros until long break, Auto Start Breaks, Auto Start Pomodoros, and Auto Check Task. Classic study defaults:
| Setting | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Focus (min) | 25 | Classic pomodoro; long enough to start, short enough to protect attention |
| Short Break (min) | 5 | Stand, look away from the page, then return |
| Long Break (min) | 15 | After four Focus blocks; eat, walk, or reset |
| Pomodoros until long break | 4 | The classic cycle length |
| Auto Start Breaks | On if you want the chime to start rest; off if you want to tap Start | Off is safer when you still need to finish a sentence before standing up |
| Auto Start Pomodoros | Usually off while studying | Keeps the next Focus from starting while you are still on a break |
Set up the study timer in this product
- Open /pomodoro. Confirm you are on Pomodoro, not the duration Timer or the date countdown.
- Click the Pomodoro settings gear in the toolbar (site navigation). The dialog title is Pomodoro Settings.
- Under Timer, set Focus (min) to 25, Short Break (min) to 5, Long Break (min) to 15, and Pomodoros until long break to 4.
- Optional: turn on Auto Start Breaks. Leave Auto Start Pomodoros off until you trust the rhythm. Turn on Auto Check Task only if you use estimates on the task list.
- Under Sound, pick a phase-end alarm and optionally a Focus background track (Rain, lo-fi, piano, and similar). Background audio starts from the speaker control on the timer after a tap — browsers will not autoplay it from a cold load.
- Click OK. Preferences stay in this browser. Then click Start (or press Space) to begin the first Focus block.
Run the session: toolbar, tasks, fullscreen
The large digits are the remaining time in the current phase. Start / Pause is Space. Skip (S) while running jumps to the next phase. M mutes Focus background sound when a track is selected. N focuses the add-task field. Shortcuts are off while Settings or the switch-task prompt is open, and while you are typing in an input.
- Toolbar: font size, Toggle fullscreen, and the Pomodoro settings gear. Fullscreen is for a desk-side display so the remaining Focus time stays readable without hovering over the laptop.
- Tasks are optional. Add a task with a pomodoro estimate, select it as the Active Task, then start Focus. The Finish At summary assumes every break runs for its full configured duration — if Auto Start Breaks is off and you pause between phases, real finish time is later.
- When a phase ends without Auto Start, the UI already shows the next phase at full duration while the alarm plays. Click Start during or after the alarm to begin counting down.
Pitfalls: tab, sleep, and autoplay
This study timer runs in the open /pomodoro tab. It is not a system alarm and it is not a push notification. If you need the phase-end sound on time, treat the tab like equipment.
- Keep the Pomodoro tab open. Closing it stops the session. Pin the tab if you tend to sweep extras away.
- Laptop sleep pauses timers. Disable sleep for the study block, or plug in and keep the lid open. A locked screen that sleeps the machine will not ring.
- Background tabs can be throttled by the browser. Prefer a visible or pinned tab over a buried one if the chime has been late.
- Sound needs a gesture. If the phase-end alarm or Focus background is silent, tap Start or Enable Sound on the page first — autoplay policy blocks audio until you interact.
- Wake Lock (when the browser supports it) can keep the screen awake while the timer runs, but it is not a substitute for keeping the tab open and the device from sleeping.

Frequently asked questions
- Is this study timer free?
- Yes. onetimer Pomodoro runs in your browser with no account or subscription. Timing preferences are saved locally on this device.
- What is the best study timer interval?
- The classic rhythm is 25 minutes Focus, 5 minutes Short Break, 15 minutes Long Break after four Focus sessions. Change Focus (min) in Pomodoro Settings if 25 is too long or too short for the subject.
- Can I track tasks while studying?
- Yes. Add tasks on /pomodoro, set an estimate in pomodoros, and select an Active Task before each Focus block. You can also study with an empty list.
- How is a study timer different from a countdown timer?
- A duration on /timer runs once and stops (or restarts if you chose that post-zero behavior). Pomodoro alternates Focus and breaks. Use /timer for one-off countdowns; use /pomodoro for a study afternoon.
- Will the timer keep running if I switch tabs or the laptop sleeps?
- Keep the /pomodoro tab open. Background tabs may be throttled. Sleep pauses the countdown — wake the machine and keep the tab if you need the alarm.
